This policy applies to Dream Beyond Boredom (formerly “The Way”) in all its versions:
- mobile: Android (Google Play, ID
com.pelagosindustrie.dreambeyondboredom); - PC: Windows, Linux and Steam Deck, distributed by Steam.
The two versions do not process the same data: the Steam version offers online play with chat, the mobile version does not. Each section states which version it concerns.
In short
- The game creates no account, shows no ads, uses no analytics or advertising ID, and sends no data to our servers: we have none.
- Your progress and settings are stored only on your device.
- Mobile: in multiplayer, your nickname and movements go directly from one device to another on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Steam: online, your Steam name, movements and chat messages are exchanged with the other players in the match, through Steam’s network (Valve).
- If you write to us, we use your message and e-mail address to reply.
1. Data controller
Pelagos, SAS à associé unique with share capital of 500 €, RCS Paris 104 476 759, SIRET 104 476 759 00014, registered office: 36 rue Scheffer, 75016 Paris.
Contact: [email protected].
2. Data stored on your device (all versions)
| Data | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Progress (completed levels, best heights, coins collected per level) | Resume your game |
| In-game coins and items unlocked with them (levels, characters, companions) | Keep what you earned by playing |
| Chosen character and companions, difficulty, last theme viewed | Restore your choices at next launch |
| Settings: language, volumes, music, vibration, graphics quality, home screen | Apply your preferences |
| Nickname (mobile: suggested by default, freely editable, up to 16 characters) | Name you to other players in local multiplayer |
| Last local IP address typed, last multiplayer mode and level, number of wins | Make reconnecting easier and show your results |
This data does not leave your device because of the game. We have no access to it. You can erase it at any time (see § 8).
On Android, the system may include app data in your Google account’s automatic backup, if enabled. That backup is managed by Google; we have no access to it.
3. Local Wi-Fi multiplayer (mobile, and local network on PC)
When you create or join a local game, the game communicates directly with other devices on the same network (up to 5 players), without a server:
- your nickname, chosen character, position and animations, the match score;
- the devices’ local IP addresses (needed to find and connect to each other);
- a random game ID, recreated each session.
These exchanges are neither collected nor kept by Pelagos. They travel unencrypted on your local network. You choose your nickname and it is shown to other players: do not use your real name or any personal information. The mobile version has no messaging.
4. Online play on Steam (PC version only)
The Steam version offers online matches for up to 30 players through Steam, the service of Valve Corporation. You need a Steam account, created and managed by Valve, not by us.
During an online match, the following is exchanged with the other players, through Valve’s servers and network:
- your Steam profile name and Steam ID, shown in the player list;
- your character, position, animations and score;
- the messages you write in the match chat;
- lobby information (public, friends-only or invite-only), and kick, vote-kick and mute decisions.
We do not receive or keep this data: it is only used to run the match, for its duration. Valve processes data linked to your Steam account and network services as an independent controller, under its own privacy policy.
Online chat rules
The chat is for the players in the match. It is not moderated by the publisher: we do not read or record messages. The rules are simple:
- no insults, harassment, hateful, discriminatory, violent or sexual content;
- no personal data (yours or anyone else’s): name, address, phone, social accounts;
- no advertising, spam or dubious links;
- minors should never agree to meet or contact outside the game someone met online.
In-game tools: mute a player, kick by the host and vote-kick. To report serious behaviour, also use Steam’s reporting tools, and write to us at [email protected] with the date, time and player name.
5. Data you send us voluntarily
If you contact support or exercise your rights: your e-mail address, your message and any information you choose to attach (device model, game version, screenshot…).
6. Data processed by the stores
Purchase, payment, billing, refunds and download are handled by Google Play (Google), the App Store (Apple) and Steam (Valve), which act as controllers for those operations. They send us aggregated statistics (sales, installs, ratings, and anonymised crash reports if you allowed them in your device settings). We never receive your bank details.
7. Purposes, legal bases, recipients, retention
| Processing | Purpose | Legal basis (GDPR art. 6) | Recipients | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local storage | Provide the game | Contract (6.1.b) | Nobody (your device) | Until erased or uninstalled |
| Local multiplayer | Run the match | Contract (6.1.b) | Other players in the match | Duration of the match |
| Steam online play and chat | Run the match | Contract (6.1.b) | Other players; Valve | Duration of the match (for us); per Valve |
| E-mail support | Answer your request | Legitimate interest (6.1.f) | Pelagos; our e-mail provider Google Workspace (Google Ireland Limited) | 3 years after the last exchange |
| Rights requests | Meet our obligations | Legal obligation (6.1.c) | Pelagos | 5 years |
No advertising, no profiling, no automated decisions, and we never sell or rent data.
Transfers outside the EU: the game itself transfers nothing to us. Valve is based in the USA; Google and Apple may process data outside the EU under their own safeguards. Our e-mail: European Union and United States.
8. Erase your data and exercise your rights
- Data on your device: in the game, main menu › Legal & support › Erase my data, or uninstall the game. We cannot erase it for you, as we have no access to it.
- Steam account: managed by Valve; request deletion from Steam Support.
- E-mails exchanged with us: write to [email protected].
You have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and portability, and to set instructions for your data after death. We reply within one month. All steps are on the Account and data deletion page.
You can lodge a complaint with the French authority, the CNIL (www.cnil.fr), or the authority in your country.
9. Children
The game collects no data from anyone, child or adult. Online on Steam, chat lets players talk with strangers: parents can use Steam’s parental controls (Family View) to restrict it.
10. Permissions
- Android: Internet, network and Wi-Fi state, multicast reception, only to find and join local games; vibration (can be turned off). No location, contacts, camera or microphone.
- iOS/iPadOS: local network access, requested the first time you search for a game. You can refuse it: only local multiplayer will be unavailable.
11. Changes
Any change to this policy is published here as a new dated version. Version 1.0, written for the mobile version, is replaced by this version, which also covers Steam.
